An uninspired screen version of Steven Sondheim's stage play, which in turn was based on Ingmar Bergman's SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT. It has nothing in common with Bergman's picture except the basic premise: that of a group of people meeting for dinner at a country estate. Those on the guest list include Taylor, a lively actress who wants to settle down; Cariou, a newly married lawyer who had a past fling with Taylor; Down, his 18-year-old virgin bride; and Rigg, the wife of Taylor's current lover, Guittard. Prince, the stage director of Sondheim's play, cannot handle the screen version and fails to build any of the pace that the play had on Broadway. Songs include "Send in the Clowns," "Every Day a Little Death," "The Glamorous Life," "Love Takes Time," "Now," "You Must Meet My Wife," "Soon," "Later," and "A Weekend in the Country" (Stephen Sondheim). The film won an Oscar for Best Adapted Score and was nominated for Best Costume Design. leave a comment
