Working yet another variation on his bumbling boy-man persona, Adam Sandler plays Nicky, the white-sheep son of Satan (Harvey Keitel). "Such a sweet boy," sighs dad, in the tone of a parent whose kid has just been arrested for vandalism. Nicky's bad brothers Cassius (Tiny Lister) and Adrian (Rhys Ifans) — one of whom once whacked Nicky in the face with a shovel and condemned viewers to 90 minutes of lisping and facial contortions — want desperately to rule Hell, so when Satan says he intends to retain his infernal throne for another 10,000 years, they opt to turn New York City into their own personal Hades. Their departure freezes the gates of Hell, with the result that Satan starts falling apart — literally. To save his father, Nicky must haul his wayward brothers home within a week, but even with the help of talking demon dog Beefy (voiced by Robert Smigel), it's an uphill battle; Nicky just isn't the brightest flame in the inferno. All this plotting is merely an excuse for comic set-pieces. Nicky's brothers possess upstanding citizens and make them do wicked things. A blind preacher (Quentin Tarantino) detects Nicky's presence and runs into a lamppost. Two moronic metal heads (Peter Dante, Jonathan Loughran) and Nicky's fey roommate (Allen Covert) get high on pot-laced cake. Nicky visits his mom, a flaky angel (Reese Witherspoon), in Heaven, which looks like an 11-year-old girlie-girl's dream dollhouse. Rodney Dangerfield plays Nicky's grandfather, Ozzy Osbourne does a clever cameo and there are appearances by SNL alumni Dana Carvey, Rob Schneider, Jon Lovitz, Michael McKean, Ellen Cleghorne and Kevin Nealon, who finds himself with a pair of breasts growing out of the top of his head. Is all this funny? Diehard Sandler fans will probably find it uproarious, but others will have to make do with the occasional chuckle. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
