Though it was only a year after THE WIZARD OF OZ, little Judy Garland had grown up and was now playing an Irish wife to Murphy. After making the trip to New York, she dies in childbirth. The film skips ahead 20 years, and we see Garland playing Murphy's daughter. She falls in love with McPhail against the wishes of her father and grandfather (Winninger), but they eventually see things her way. The darling Garland does her best with the weak script, contributing her vocal talents to the following tunes: "Nellie Kelly I Love You" (George M. Cohan), "Nellie Is a Darling," "It's a Great Day for the Irish" (Roger Edens), "A Pretty Girl Milking Her Cow" (adapted by Edens), "Danny Boy," and a swing version of "Singing in the Rain" (Arthur Freed, Nacio Herb Brown). Reportedly, studio chief Louis B. Mayer was quite upset at the very thought of young Miss Garland playing the dual role of a girl and her mother, leaving the man to cry to anyone within earshot "We can't let that baby have a baby!" leave a comment
