WE Greenlights Little Miss Perfect Child Pageant Show

If you weren't too freaked out by the spray-tan scenes in Little Miss Sunshine — not to mention the endless footage of JonBenet Ramsey — has We TV got a child-beauty-pageant show for you! The net has ordered six one-hour episodes of Little Miss Perfect. The show from NorthSouth Prods will follow Florida families who enter their 5- to 11-year-old daughters in a lil' contest that we suspect may involve sailor hats, batons and lots of Mary Kay. "There's a real fascination with these beauty pageants," Steve Cheskin, senior VP programming at WE, told The Hollywood Reporter. He acknowledges that the audience for the show may be split. (Maybe between fans cheering on the girls and critics calling Child Protective Services.)Does this sound like the perfect show? Or one to miss? — Erin FoxRelated• Watch More Beauty Pageants in Our Online Video Guide read more

"His Visit: Day Two"

Well I'll start by saying that even though I still don't fully comprehend what's happening in this series, I am even more intrigued after watching the second episode, and I’m excited to see where this show goes. I never really got into NYPD Blue or Deadwood, so I can't pretend to be all that familiar with David Milch's previous work, but I am completely aware of the respect he deserves for his contributions to television by creating shows that challenge viewers to think. Milch is not known to spoon feed his viewers predictable drivel, and I, for one, wouldn't bite if he did. As far as the episode goes, here are my thoughts on round two…Maybe John's gifts aren't limited to what comes out of his pockets. Doesn't it figure that as soon as Mitch relented and allowed Shaun to compete in the surfing competition, Shaun fell off his "stick" and broke his neck? I was very interested by the fact that this happened almost immediately after Freddy slapped John in the face and John ask... read more

In Praise of the SNL Parody

Hello, all. It's been another great week for The Office and the Office drunk. I'm the redhead at the corner desk. Wild week. Not the typical Meredith-takes-her-top-off wild. Just interesting-and-jam-packed wild. The Office has now crossed a new threshold: An SNL parody! That is a milestone. Rainn Wilson hosted this past week and kicked some major ass. He is one of the most talented actors who I will ever work with. The Office sketch in the opening was pretty cool. Lorne Michaels was more like "Lorne Michaels Scott." No Meredith, but that's OK. (It could have been a guy in drag. I love drag, but I am sure it would have been subpar drag.) Anyway, as a comic actress who has had my own SNL "almost" story, I was really happy to see the Office opening. When I was in Chicago in 1991, I was touring with Second City and I did a show called The Miss Vagina Pageant (directed by Jill Soloway, a writer-producer from Six Feet Under) at the Annoyance Theater, and Lorne Michaels came to see it and ... read more

February 25, 2007: Family Guy Versus Oscar

The Academy Awards are on tonight, so Fox scheduled two Family Guy repeats. From 9-10 pm/ET tonight I switched back and forth between Oscar coverage and Family Guy, so this post will be about both. Right before I hit the Fox pre-set button on my remote, they had just handed out the first Oscar of the evening. It only took almost 30 minutes. And what a first award it was! Art Direction. Riveting! I couldn’t hit the button fast enough. I love movies and although every year I rant and rave about the Academy Awards, I watch. It’s a televised gaper delay. The clock turned 9:00, and I moved over to Family Guy. The first episode provided one of the best sight gags this season: Joe’s legs floating to the surface of the beer vat every three seconds. And the idea of messing about with the opening credit sequence was inspired. During the first commercial break I switched back over to the Oscars. Alan Arkin won Best Supporting Actor for Little Miss Sunshine! Now that made me happ... read more

Road to Oscar: Big Wins for Sunshine, Other Faves

With the Oscars just weeks away, some last-minute wins at other awards shows:• Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker earned top acting honors at Sunday's BAFTAs, aka the British Academy Awards.• Little Miss Sunshine and The Departed (where's my DVD?!) were the big winners at Sunday's Writers Guild of America Awards, in the original- and adapted-screenplay contests, respectively.• Cars was named best animated feature at the 34th-annual Annie Awards, but Flushed Away (aka the "mouse got flushed down the toilet movie," which my sons are dying to see... on DVD) came away with the most wins: five. read more

February 1, 2007: Ben Franklin

Hello, this is Kate Flannery, the boozy redhead from the best show on TV, The Office. OK, maybe not the best show, but the best ensemble of a comedy series, according to the Screen Actors Guild. We won, fans. We won, and itfeels good and crazy, and I'm sore. (That award weighs 35 pounds!)I am here to talk about "Ben Franklin," the episode airing this week. There is a shower for Phyllis, but the big news is... Meredith yells at Angela!!!!! A new moody Meredith moment. Can you say alcoholic? I knew you could. How about that, sports fans? This is a funny episode written by Mindy Kaling aka Kelly Kapoor. It was fun to tell my old pal Angela to shut up. I am contractually obligated to keep my mouth shut, but they are showing this clip in the promos, so I'm cool. The new episodes have been a lot of fun to shoot — especially because we just found out that we are going to be back for a full fourth season. Ahh, job security. It keeps me very grateful.Speaking of grateful... we won a SAG... read more

9:54: The Queen takes her throne. Helen Mirren beats out Meryl, Kate, Judi and Penélope and might as well have an award statue made to look like her by now. 9:57: Annette Bening wasted no time announcing the cast of Little Miss Sunshine for the final award. I want to thank Abigail Breslin for not repeating her pageant dance tonight. I want to thank Greg Kinnear for closing out the show with a few funny remarks ("Thanks, Volkswagen... "). And I want to thank the Screen Actors Guild for having a two-hour award show. Good night! read more

Dreamgirls Leads Oscar Nods, Yet Snubbed for Best Pic

Nominations for the 79th Annual Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday morning by Salma Hayek — presumably because of the abundance of Latino names that she so deliciously enunciated — and Dreamgirls bested the rest with eight total nods, yet was conspicuously left out of the best-picture race. Babel followed with seven noms.
