After their elopement becomes public knowledge, newlyweds Margaret Sullavan and Douglass Montgomery leave their small German town for Weimar-era Berlin, where they move in with Montgomery's stepmother, Catherine Doucet, in what is eventually revealed to be a well-disguised, high-class
