Little Lord Fauntleroy: Review
This was the third of four versions of the durable Frances Burnett story. First made in 1914 and then again in 1922, it was later a TV movie with Ricky Schroder and Alec Guinness. Freddie Bartholomew is a nice young Brooklyn boy whose mother, Dolores Barrymore, is the widow of an Englishman. Her late husband's father, C. Aubrey Smith, hates Americans simply because they are Americans. When it's discovered that the boy is the heir to a title and a fortune, he has to go to England, claim his inheritance and win over his grumpy grandfather into the bargain. Once that's done, Bartholomew and his pals foil the schemes of a false claimant and all winds up well. The expression "Little Lord Fauntleroy" has become associated with prissiness, but that's not the case here at all: Bartholomew ably demonstrates his manliness against a bunch of Brooklyn toughs. Mickey Rooney does a small bit as a shoeshine boy and, as always, stands out. Guy Kibbee, as a Brooklyn grocer, is also excellent in a role that could have been a parody in the hands of a lesser actor. The nifty acting is supported by terrific technical work and a script that goes right for the heart.
