In turn-of-the-century Nova Scotia, a stern, bigoted grandfather (Duncan Macrae) tries to pass on his prejudices against the Boers to his orphaned grandsons (Vincent Winter and Jon Whiteley). When the boys ask for a dog, the grandfather forbids it, but their desire to express love is so overwhelming that they adopt a baby. This is a warm, human film that conveys its message without being heavy-handed. At the film's heart are the delightfully natural performances of Winter and Whiteley, two fine child actors who make their young characters extraordinarily believable. The direction by Philip Leacock is sensitive and caring. This one ought to please everyone in the family. leave a comment
