Little Fauss (Michael J. Pollard) is a slow-witted neophyte motorcycle racer; Big Halsy (Robert Redford) is the selfish suspended pro racer who takes Little on as a mechanic, provided that he can use his name and bike. As the pair experience a series of on-the-road misadventures--including their mutual interest in Rita Nebraska (Lauren Hutton)--Halsy continually abuses the ever-admiring Little, and eventually they face each other in a race. Life imitated art in the making of this film, as Redford and Pollard reportedly fought constantly. Furthermore, director Sidney J. Furie is said to have wanted no part of the project (which was to have been directed by its screenwriter, Charles Eastman), and as a result, LITTLE FAUSS AND BIG HALSY is a mixed bag, with a helter skelter plot but nicely coordinated motorcycle action and some good background music by Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Bob Dylan. leave a comment
