Based on a novel by Le Carre, THE LITTLE DRUMMER GIRL depicts the radical political transformation of Keaton, an American actress living in London, whose pro-Palestinian sympathies are world famous (shades of Vanessa Redgrave!). Traveling to Greece to shoot a commercial, she falls for Voyagis, who she thinks is a Palestinian terrorist. Actually he is an Israeli agent, and the commercial is a set-up to get her into the hands of Israeli intelligence. Kinski, another Israeli agent, persuades her not only to switch to the Israeli side in the struggle but to infiltrate the Palestinian terrorist organization. The locales change quickly, jumping from place to place as Kinski and his minions search out terrorists and Keatonis overwhelmed by what is required of her. Miscast, Keaton delivers a flat performance, but Kinski is outstanding as the heavy-hitting Israeli agent. Crammed into 130 minutes of screen time, Le Carre's story loses much of its motivation, and although there is plenty of action and suspense, often it seems that the action is happening in the wrong places to the wrong people. Moreover, while THE LITTLE DRUMMER GIRL purports to take no sides in the struggles of the Middle East, the massacre scenes are staged to promote cheers when the Arabs are knocked off. leave a comment
