Astor plays a widow who wants to insure the futures of her two children by marrying Lockhart. Garland is the daughter who, along with teenage friend Bartholomew, knows Lockhart is all wrong for Astor and manages to get her fixed up with Pidgeon by the film's end. This was Garland's first real acting role and she was marvelous, delivering an innocent, yet polished performance. She sings "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart!" (James Hanley), which became one of her signature tunes throughout her career. This was her only teaming with Bartholomew and they worked well together, although his career was soon over. Garland's career, on the other hand, was to skyrocket within the next two years with the making of THE WIZARD OF OZ. Astor, by the way, would be Garland's mother once again in MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS. Other tunes in this film include: "Ten Pins in the Sky" (Joseph McCarthy, Milton Ager), and "On the Bumpy Road to Love" (Al Lewis, Al Hoffmann, Murray Mencher). leave a comment
