Hart plays an Auschwitz survivor who desperately wants to emigrate to Palestine. She meets Goring, who she thinks will help her. He is actually a dealer in white slaves and plans to ship her to South America, where some of his ex-Nazi friends have set up a market. Boyd, a Dutch police officer wracked with guilt over his girl friend's death in Auschwitz, accidentally kills Goring. Determined to atone for his past by helping Hart in her quest, he arranges passage on a ship for her and himself, where a medical examination shows that Nazi experiments have resulted in Hart's sterility. Word reaches the two that Boyd is wanted for questioning about Goring's death. Since Hart's immigration is illegal, he strikes a deal: allow her into Palestine, and he will turn himself in. At times this is a fascinating film, with fine performances by the two leads. There is a tendency, however, to play some things in a somber, heavy-handed manner that makes them seem more psychologically revealing than they truly are. Some nice location work in Holland, London, Tangiers, and Israel. leave a comment
