Once again, a fine, natural talent like Caine is wasted on a film that would be better served by being cut up and made into guitar picks. Based on Graham Greene's 1973 The Honorary Consul, Christopher Hampton's screenplay takes us on a trip between tedium and apathy. Dr. Plarr (Richard Gere) helps some revolutionaries kidnap the US ambassador. But the terrorists kidnap the wrong guy, taking the British consul (Caine) instead, and threaten to execute the poor chump if the usual political prisoners aren't released from jail. In the meantime, Plarr has managed to impregnate the consul's wife. Gere takes his clothes off a few times so his fans can see he hasn't gained any weight. He hasn't gained any ability either--his accent is about as British as Toshiro Mifune's. The other acting jobs are good, especially Bob Hoskins as a South American police chief who makes the decision to end the hostage problem. BEYOND THE LIMIT is a political thriller that fails to thrill. leave a comment
