Sellers plays a dull, honest schoolmaster in a small French town who suddenly finds himself jobless after he flunks the nephew of a local baroness. He soon falls in with a shifty city councilman, Lom, who sees Sellers' mild-mannered, unassuming character as the perfect front for his crooked wheelings and dealings.
