LIGHTHOUSE | DEAD OF NIGHT

Cross SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and 70s UK thriller BEYOND THE FOG and you get this lame British horror picture, which features plenty of arterial spray but few scares. Leo Rook (Chris Adamson, the gravel-voiced co-star of RAZOR BLADE SMILE) is a sadistic serial killer fond of hacking up his victims and labeling their body parts. He's being transported secretly to prison on a boat that holds several other inmates, but escapes by killing his guards and jumping overboard. Rook heads for Gehenna Lighthouse, located on a small rock island 300 miles off the UK mainland. After slicing and dicing his way through the lighthouse keepers, Rook switches off the big light and waits for the prison ship to crash. The survivors who wash ashore include feisty criminal psychiatrist McCloud (Rachel Shelly); handsome Spade (James Purefoy), who was convicted of killing his wife during an epileptic seizure; the crusty, alcoholic captain (Paul Brooke); the by-the-book ship's officer (Chris Dunne) and other familiar types. Their number is steadily reduced, a la TEN LITTLE INDIANS, by the machete-wielding Rook. The film's publicity materials claim that Rook is "the most merciless serial killer since Leatherface, Michael Myers, Jason," but he's more like Pat Boone on a bummer, stalking the island in white patent-leather shoes. It's hard to work up much sympathy for the two-dimensional characters, even when they're dangling off the lighthouse by a flaming rope. This film's brief theatrical release is almost simultaneous with its appearance on video under the title DEAD OF NIGHT. leave a comment --Dennis Dermody
