Although cavalry troops did not play much of a role during WW I, THE LIGHTHORSEMEN tells the story of one successful use of mounted infantry troops in that conflict--the charge of the Australian Lighthorse at Beersheba, a desert town in Palestine held by Turkish troops. The plot focuses on a quartet of Lighthorsemen (Blake, Walton, McKenzie, and Sweet) who participate in the charge. The film is filled with war-movie cliches, but the care that went into THE LIGHTHORSEMEN is obvious, and its $10-million budget shows. The charge itself is unlike anything that's been done in Hollywood in decades, and the only scene that compares is the climactic attack in THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE. leave a comment
