This is the dreadfully sentimental tale of Cohn, daughter of entertainer Silver, and her struggle to make it in show business on her own as a singer. Along the way, she meets with both professional and romantic failure of the most cliched kind, but she keeps on plugging until the
emotionally ambiguous ending, in which the sadder and wiser heroine chalks it all up to experience. The treacly, Oscar-winning title song (by producer-director-screenwriter Brooks) became a big (and only) hit for Debbie Boone, daughter of Pat. Karey Ciszk sings it here.
