Lianna (Linda Griffiths) is the unsure wife of a domineering college professor (Jon DeVries). He ridicules her decision to return to school, but she continues to pursue her degree anyway. Ruth (Jane Hallaren), one of her teachers, helps Lianna to cope with her internal struggles. The two women gradually grow closer until their friendship blossoms into a love affair. This is a restrained and caring film that never lapses into preachiness about its lesbian theme. Director-writer John Sayles was noted for writing such films as THE HOWLING and ALLIGATOR, so he could finance his own independent features. The direction and dialog appear completely natural, allowing the characters to tell the story; not a moment in the film seems false or contrived. The two female leads give sensitive performances, and DeVries handles his character's sexual confusions and anger convincingly. There are some technical problems, symptomatic of a low budget, but they don't much hamper this otherwise fine and intelligently told story. leave a comment
