Let It Snow: Review
Boy meets girl. Boy loses girl because of a contrived personality quirk. Whether or not it matters to you if boy and girl get back together depends on your tolerance for bland romantic comedy. Warned off love by his Grammy (Judith Malina) who claimed the only place romance ever got her was Bellevue and forced to watch while his divorcée mother (Bernadette Peters) turn their home into the "international house of dating," 17-year-old James Ellis (Kipp Marcus) has his heart pretty well locked away when the ideal girl (Alice Dylan) comes along. Her name is Sarah, and she's just as cute and quirky and overwritten a character as he: She doesn't sleep and can't stand to watch the endings of movies; he's really still a kid at heart, forever hoping that tomorrow will be a "snow day" a surprise day off from life. Together, they make snow angels. But their friendship remains just that, until four years later when James, who's now with the C.I.A. (the Culinary Institute of America, silly), visits Sarah at college (really working that weather theme, she's studying to be a meteorologist). After an evening out at a college formal, Sarah and James finally kiss. They're both thrilled by this latest development, but because she's compelled to leave right in the middle of things, Sarah decides to risk blowing the whole romance by putting James's affections to the test. She calls him and announces that she feels their brush with romance was a mistake; James, prepared to believe the worst about love and lovers, concurs, and the two agree to end it all before it even begins. That James spends the rest of the movie trying to get her back (Sarah conveniently leaves for a year abroad the very next day) goes without saying, and his quest quickly grows tiresome. It's hard to have much sympathy for James's fear of intimacy you'd think he'd at least want to get to second base before running off and neither he nor Sarah is a likeable enough character that you'd want to sweat the details of their relationship. A few funny bits float the film for a while it's always nice to see Peters onscreen, no matter what she's doing but it's really as showcase for Marcus, who also wrote the script. His brother, Adam Marcus, directed.
