Cocteau's brilliant domestic drama which many, including Cocteau himself, consider to be his greatest achievement. Based on his stage play (performed ten years earlier with much the same cast) it casts de Bray as the dangerously possessive mother who is wed to Andre, a weak and defeated man. De Bray opposes the marriage of her young son Marais to the beautiful Day. It turns out that Day is the mistress of Andre, who happens to be the object of Marais's aunt's (Dorziat's) desires. When the tangled affairs come into the open, de Bray commits suicide, unable to accept the loss of her magnetic hold over her family. Set in only two locations--de Bray's family's apartment and Day's apartment--the film is, as Cocteau said, a record "of the acting of an incomparable cast." Georges Auric's score is a prime example of sound in perfect unity with the picture. A far-inferior remake, INTIMATE RELATIONS, was released in Britain in 1953.
