Les Miserables

1952, Movie, NR, 105 mins

This was the fifth version of Victor Hugo's novel (versions by Fox Film Co. in 1918, Universal in 1927, United Artists in 1935, and a French production in 1936 preceded it). The story of justice and the law is told in three episodes: Rennie's arrest for stealing bread and his imprisonment; his becoming a mayor and adoption of Paget; and Newton's hounding of Rennie. The film ends when Newton lets Rennie go and commits suicide for going against his own principles. Although a well-crafted production, it doesn't hold up as well as the 1935 UA version. leave a comment
