One of many versions of Victor Hugo's classic novel about a thief who tries to make good but who is hounded by a determined detective. At 305 minutes, this version is arguably the most faithful to the novel, but it still doesn't equal the 1935 US adaptation. Upon its release in Paris in
1933, this was shown in three parts--TEMPETE SOUS UN CRANE (120m), LES THENARDIERS (90m), LIBERTE, LIBERTE CHERIE (95m)--and in three different theaters. It was later cut to a single 165-minute version and later edited again into two parts--JEAN VALJEAN (109m) and COSETTE (100m).
