The beginning of Sirk's film is a character study of the disparate priests at St. Gregory Seminary. Boyer is the head of the seminary and a former criminal lawyer; Addy was a concert pianist torn between the priesthood and his music. Demarest is the monsignor inclined to challenge the Jesuits' faith at every opportunity.
