Despite the fact that he was one of the most facile screenwriters in film history, and probably the most highly paid, Ben Hecht did pen some clinkers. This is one of them. Wayne is a down-and-out adventurer who finds himself in a Timbuktu jail for lack of funds and for brawling. He is hired by idealist and dreamer Brazzi to guide him to remote and near-mythical ruins in the Sahara Desert where a great treasure reportedly awaits discovery. Brazzi's own vanished father sought the treasure years earlier. Wayne doesn't for a minute believe Brazzi but goes along for wages and to breathe free air. Joining them against Wayne's wishes is street girl Loren, who is out for adventure and a wedding ring from Brazzi, although he seems indifferent to her. As Wayne predicts, rivalry over the girl develops between him and Brazzi, particularly when Wayne makes his dislike of Loren known, a disguise for his own attraction to the earthy woman. LEGEND OF THE LOST is an exercise in senseless brutality and insanity and presents a menage a trois reminiscent of the Three Stooges. One of Wayne's lines aptly describes the script: "We're out in the middle of nowhere looking for nothing in the wrong season." He looks with a grimace at his pack mule and adds: "Damn it, you have a pal on this trip, a fellow jackass--that's me!" He then loudly heehaws. The whole thing is a strain on the viewer, who must plod over sand dunes with this mismatched trio, through a dull story and a dismal ending. leave a comment
