Only 18 and already tired of the shallow guppie lifestyle, Valley boy Kyle (Sean Tataryn) decides to try his hand at poetry and bohemian living. So he hies his bubble butt to L.A.'s funky Silverlake district, and starts hanging out in coffee shops, waiting for inspiration. Of course, what Kyle's really waiting for is romance, which walks in with a leather jacket slung casually across its shoulders. Rough-trade pin-up boy Mike (Christopher Bradley) is a Tom of Finland cartoon come to life, a construction worker who's into S&M sex and nearly scares Kyle to death just by flirting with him. Their affair has its ups and downs: The sex is great (though Kyle wonders plaintively whether maybe they couldn't wait a while before they get to the handcuffs), but their friends and lifestyles clash, and a whole lot of experience separates the starry-eyed teenager and the cynical blue-collar stud. A labor of love that intersperses extremely raunchy sex scenes with silly comedy and gentle digs at various gay lifestyles, this sweetly disingenuous romp marks a 180-degree career turn for David DeCoteau, whose filmography includes such direct-to-video and cable exploitation fare as Test Tube Teens From the Year 2000, Puppet Master III, I Was a Teenage Sex Mutant and Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama. The production is distinctly rough around the edges, but it's propelled by tremendous enthusiasm and a blithely untroubled approach to being gay in the '90s: There's plenty of angst, but it's all about straying boyfriends and self-discovery. B-movie fans will be amused to spot longtime bad-guy Nicholas Worth as a pretentious poet and John Waters regular Mink Stole as a cafe owner. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
