Powell is a small-time lawyer who moves up the forensic ranks to assistant prosecutor. On the way to the top he's charged with blackmailing Dodd, but he's found innocent. Blondell plays his secretary, and Landau is the political boss who sets him up with the blackmail charge. Few courtroom
scenes; the action focuses on Powell's ascension to suavity in cultured society. He and Blondell are excellent, even though mismatched.
