An above-average oater, THE LAWLESS BREED loosely chronicles the life of real-life Texas outlaw and gunman John Wesley Hardin, a man who claimed in his autobiography to have killed no fewer than 40 men, 19 more than Billy the Kid is said to have slain. Hudson energetically plays Hardin, whose criminal career is shown in flashback--how he was compelled to adopt a life of crime, a rather hackneyed excuse--and his exploits with Union soldiers, Indians, and, most of all, other gunslingers. Interspersed in this episodic tale is the story of his sporadic love affair with Adams and of their son--whom Hudson stops from repeating his own tragic life at the risk of his neck. The portrait is fatalistic and somewhat glum in spots, but Walsh directs with great vitality, providing plenty of action. Hudson, in his first starring role, does an above-average job, as does the lovely Adams. Universal put enough behind this production to raise it from the humdrum values of a B western. leave a comment
