A bid for action-film stardom by martial-arts expert Steven Seagal, ABOVE THE LAW is a well-crafted shoot-'em-up, one surprisingly critical of CIA covert operations. A retired CIA agent-turned-Chicago cop, Nico Toscani (Seagal), and his partner, Delores Jackson (Pam Grier), discover that the CIA is running drugs to fund an invasion of Nicaragua. Agents are torturing or murdering those who might blow the whistle on the operation, and they intend to assassinate a crusading senator who plans to expose the scheme. Learning that his hated superior at the CIA, Zagon (Henry Silva), is in charge of the operation, Nico sets out to stop him. ABOVE THE LAW is a slam-bang action film with some stunning scenes of mayhem and violence. Seagal, in his big debut as an action hero, makes an impressive splash; tall, lean, and soft-spoken, he is more reminiscent of Clint Eastwood than of muscle-bound Stallone-Schwarzenegger automatons, and plays the part of loving family man convincingly. Director Davis, a Chicago native, has a great eye for locations, concentrating on street-level neighborhoods and conveying a sense of time, place, and community little seen on American screens. leave a comment
