Another perverse Lon Chaney circus vehicle, adapted from the play Laugh, Clown, Laugh! by David Belasco and Tom Cushing. A young girl named is adopted by Tito (Chaney), a melancholy circus clown who performs under the name Flit. He names the child Simonetta, and she matures into a beautiful young woman (Loretta Young). There are laughs and there are laughs. Larry walking into the sushi place to loud greetings of "Chicken Teriyaki Boy"? That's a laugh. But Larry's father watching porn so loud it could be heard throughout the whole front hall of the nursing home? That's a laugh. I mean, I'm giggling as I type this. His sweet, old dad with those giant glasses, saying "What? I can't hear it." Truly a classic moment, and one that can be shown only on pay-cable.
