The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire certainly lived up to its name this weekend, shattering a November record at the box office with an estimated $161.1 million in earnings. Not only is that about $10 million more than the original Hunger Games made in its opening weekend in 2012, but would also make Catching Fire the fourth-highest opening weekend ever, and the top grossing debut for a 2D-only movie, Box Office Mojo reports.
The Best Man Holiday wasn't good enough to overcome Thor: The Dark World at the box office this weekend. For the second week in a row, the Thor sequel reigned supreme, staying in first place with $38.4 million in receipts, Box Office Mojo reports.
Thor: The Dark World hammered the box office this weekend, hauling in $86.1 million — about $20 million better than the first Thor did in its debut weekend, and more than the other movies in this week's Top 10 combined. The sequel had a fairly disappointing 3-D showing though, with only 39 percent of receipts coming from the 3-D version, Box Office Mojo reports.
Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford
Ender's Game dominated the box office in its debut this weekend, surpassing Bad Grandpa to claim the No. 1 spot with $28 million, Box Office Mojo reports. Bad Grandpa dropped a spot to second place with $20.5 million.
