Based on the humorous Neil Simon play of the same name, this film is not nearly so funny. The story centers on Arkin, a successful seafood restaurateur, who (depressed about being middle-aged) dreams of having just one passionate love affair in his life. He acquires the key to his mother's unoccupied apartment and then attempts to carry on an affair with three different women: Kellerman, Prentiss, and Taylor. Each tryst ends unsuccessfully, and in the end Arkin telephones his wife and asks her to meet him at his mother's apartment. Arkin does his comedic best as a man surviving a mid-life crisis. Prentiss sounds as if she's strangling on a pretzel so garbled is her delivery. leave a comment
