A gang of confidence tricksters led by Duryea descends on a small town in southern California intending to cheat Caulfield, the widow of a war hero, out of her savings by having her put up money for a memorial to her late husband. Payne is the smooth-talking front man for the gang, who finds himself unable to go through with the scheme when he falls in love with the mark.
