In this faithful adaptation of the Rose Franken play, Robert Montgomery brings his new bride, Helen Hayes, home to the ancestral hearth only to be met by a domineering, selfish mother, Louise Closser Hale, in one of the best roles of her career. Montgomery's family is all snobbery, a
pervasive attitude that nearly wrecks the infant marriage. Hayes is splendid as the victimized wife struggling for identity and love. Montgomery attempts to mollify mama at first but ends up doing the stalwart thing to save his wife from social oblivion.
