LAMERICA
starstarstarstar
A boldly chilling portrait of post-Communist Europe in moral eclipse, directed with passion and singular grace by Italian Gianni Amelio (STOLEN CHILDREN). A pair of cynical Italian capitalists, Gino and Fiore (Enrico Lo Verso and Michele Placido) need an Albanian -- any Albanian -- to serve as front man for a business scheme. They find him in Spiro, an addled old man who has spent 50 years in a Communist prison. When Spiro disappears, Gino sets out in pursuit, discovering a chaotic, near-hallucinatory Albania and a dubious dream of spiritual renewal in "Lamerica." Beautifully structured despite an episodic plot, brilliantly acted (especially by Lo Verso, one of the most gifted actors of his generation), and genuinely moving, LAMERICA just might be the film of the year. leave a comment
