Based on the memoirs of little-known stage actress Leslie Carter, this is the story of a woman (Hopkins), divorced from her husband and separated from her son, who devotes her entire life to the stage. Her only goal is to regain her lost child by the wealth and fame she hopes to achieve. Through her constant efforts to approach the famous producer Belasco (Rains) for a job, she eventually gets a part.
