The Lady Takes A Flyer

1958, Movie, NR, 94 mins

Inspired by the true story of a husband-and-wife airplane ferrying service ("the flying Fords"), Chandler and Turner star in this romanticized screen version. When she becomes pregnant, Turner is forced to remain grounded and tend house. Bored by the responsibilities of a family, Chandler begins seeking entertainment and companionship elsewhere. Neglected Turner, tired of waiting at home for her husband, takes a plane out on her own, only to find herself lost in a thick fog. Chandler saves her by relaying messages to her from the ground, saving her life and ultimately their marriage. Smooth direction and competent performances are hurt by an uneven and plodding script. Jack Arnold, the director, is better known for the science-fiction films he directed in the 1950s, such as IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE (produced by the same producer, Alland, who was the inquiring reporter in Orson Welles' CITIZEN KANE), THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, and THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN. leave a comment
