1950, Movie, NR, 72 mins

So-so picture with few thrills. Lamarr is a beautiful refugee, and the US government has a plan to stop illegal aliens from coming into the country. Heading up the effort is Hodiak, who pretends to be Hungarian and is apparently trying to make his way into the US without a passport, through Cuba. He gets involved with Lamarr and convinces her to work with him uncovering the racket. Macready is the villain behind the smuggling, and Lamarr maneuvers her way into his inner sanctum. Once Macready realizes the Feds are on to him, he tries to escape with Lamarr and takes her north in a light plane to Florida. The main problem is that he doesn't know how to fly and neither does she! They crash-land in the Everglades; he is shot and killed and she is rescued. The subject of illegal aliens was handled far better and much more excitingly by MGM when they did BORDER INCIDENT the year before. Hodiak was pleasant but never an exciting actor. Macready was his usual evil self, but Lamarr needed better support in order to score and the result was an unintended B movie, produced by a man who had specialized in B movies but managed to overcome short budgets in the past and present such winners as LASSIE COME HOME. leave a comment
