Stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, the subject of the Rosalind Russell starrer GYPSY, took time out from doffing her clothes to write the mystery this sometimes funny, sometimes tension-filled film is based upon. Dixie Daisy (Stanwyck) is a burlesque star at a theater operated by S.B. Foss (Bromberg), and Biff Branningan (O'Shea) is the comic whose advances are continually spurned by her. After two of the company's strippers are strangled, Dixie and Biff team up to find the murderer and fall in love in the process. Barbara Stanwyck sings "Take It Off the E-String, Play It on the G-String" (Sammy Cahn, Harry Akst) while doing a dynamic strip number, Frank Fenton warbles "So This Is You" (Cahn, Akst) and a good time is had by all. This was Hunt Stromberg's first independent picture after nearly 20 years of hits at MGM. Arthur Lange earned an Oscar nomination for his music. leave a comment
