Wayne, a young lawyer who is fighting against a local lottery racket, meets and falls in love with Munson, whose dad (Stephenson) runs the lottery. Munson tries to convince him that the lottery isn't that bad, but when one of the recent winners is murdered, Wayne goes after the culprit full-force. Stephenson, however, is unaware that his assistant, Middleton, is skimming the profits instead of giving them to charity. Middleton's goon kills the boss, and because Wayne is in charge of the anti-lottery squad he is blamed indirectly. With her dad murdered, Munson takes charge of the operation. The snooping Wayne comes up with the necessary proof to indict everyone involved with the racket, including Munson. When a ferocious storm deluges the courthouse with flood water, Middleton tries to escape, taking Munson with him. He hijacks a boat, leaving the doomed Munson waiting on a levee. Wayne also gets on the boat, and in an attempt to flee from his pursuer, Middleton drowns. As fate would have it, Wayne and Munson end up as Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds. Though it's highly implausible that this gal would ever run such a racket, the movie still is a nice piece of entertainment. Costello, a matinee idol in the old silent days, plays a small part in this film. He is also remembered today as being among the first important stage actors to turn to the screen, and the father of silent stars Helene and Dolores Costello. leave a comment
