Lady Chatterley's Lover

D.H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover was banned in the US for more than 30 years, and this tame film version of the novel met a similar fate. The familiar story revolves around the torrid affair between Constance Chatterley (Danielle Darrieux), the young wife of an impotent aristocrat (Leo Genn), and the estate's gamekeeper (Erno Crisa). Although the controversy surrounding Lawrence's book stemmed from its graphic sexual descriptions, the film eschews steamy depiction, cutting instead to shots of burning embers in the fireplace at the appropriate moments.
