Mrs. Hilyard (de Havilland), a wealthy semi-invalid who lives in a three-story New York townhouse, finds herself stranded in her cagelike elevator as a result of an electrical failure. Malcolm (Swan), her rebellious 29-year-old son, is not around, but the alarm she rings catches the attention of a wino (Corey) who breaks into the house. Instead of helping, he makes himself at home, later bringing in Sade (Sothern), a prostitute friend. Three teenage punks led by psychotic Randall (Caan) arrive to terrorize Mrs. Hilyard, rape Sade, and kill the wino. The tension continues to mount, and the violence escalates on the way to the shocking finale. It came as a surprise to many that this realistic, intense thriller was written and produced by Luther Davis, who cowrote "Kismet" for Broadway. Davis has said that the story was based on fact, and that his desire was to jolt the public out of its easy acceptance of the pervasiveness of violence in modern American society. LADY IN A CAGE was banned in England due to the subject matter. leave a comment
