1951, Movie, NR, 79 mins

An 18th-century costume drama set in England, this casts Hayward as Dick Turpin, the real-life bandit whose legend was memorialized in Alfred Noyes' poem "Dick Turpin's Ride." He bravely rides 200 miles on horseback from London to York to clear his wife, who, in Noyes' version of the celebrated (but apparently apocryphal) ride, is about to be hanged as an accomplice to murder. He arrives on time, proving his wife's innocence but incriminating himself. At the end it is he whose neck is placed in the noose. The valor of Noyes' Turpin never really makes it to the screen. leave a comment
