George Stevens' remake of the 1925 silent film about life on a farm in Indiana features John Beal in the title role as a youngster in love with the daughter of a neighboring country gentleman. Of course, the old fellow doesn't think too much of the young clodhopper. Stevens' strong
direction here can be seen as a sign of things to come in SHANE (1953) and GIANT (1956). Recognizing talent when he saw it, producer Pandro S. Berman signed Stevens to direct ALICE ADAMS (1935), which garnered an Academy Award Best Picture nomination.
