Colorful yet monotonous, L.627 methodically depicts the sordid world of a small drug squad in contemporary Paris. Bertrand Tavernier's 1992 film, released in the US in 1994, deserves credit for avoiding the standard formula, but it also fails to enliven the very milieu it so convincingly
recreates.
The title refers to the French public health code that regulates all offenses related to the possession, trade and consumption of narcotics. It is a drug law with which Lucien "Lulu" Marguet (Didier Bezace), an undercover cop in the 7th Division of the Judicial Police, is all too familiar. Lulu
gets satisfaction from arresting drug dealers, but he feels constrained...
