Coasting on an oil slick of hype generated by grunge-girl diva Courtney Love's attempts to suppress it, UK shockumentarian Nick Broomfield's investigation into the death of rock idol Kurt Cobain exudes a near-irresistible freak-show fascination. Love comes off badly: Broomfield never succeeds in interviewing her at any length, but compiles a disturbing record of her harassment and intimidation of journalists she can't control, in light of which the hypocrisy of her carefully scripted remarks at an American Civil Liberties Union function is simply mind-boggling. But for all the conspiratorial talk, evidence that Love had anything to do with her husband's apparent suicide by shotgun just isn't there. Broomfield, who has in recent years made high-profile sleaze his beat, turns over rocks in Seattle, Portland and Los Angeles and uncovers a sorry cross-section of fringe-dwelling lowlifes, including Cobain's strung-out "best friend" Dylan Carlson; Amy, who bears a startling resemblance to Love before her glammed-up Hollywood makeover and claims she shot up with Kurt and Courtney; Love's opportunistic father, Hank Harrison, whose book suggests that his daughter killed Cobain because he was going to divorce her; a young nanny who heard "too much will talk" during her stint at the Cobain household; an obsessed private investigator who's bankrupted himself trying to prove that Cobain's death was murder; a former punk singer, one of Love's exes, who claims pathetically that she pushed him so hard he gave up music; a pair of inept, self-proclaimed stalkerazzi who promise to help Broomfield ambush Love; and a bloated, drunken excuse for a thrash-rocker who insists that she once offered him $50,000 to whack her husband. They're not a persuasive bunch. Cobain's first girlfriend, and his sentimental but wholly sympathetic Aunt Mary -- who fostered his early interest in music -- are pretty much the only people who don't come off as opportunistic, bottom-feeding losers. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
