Sure, it's a silly exercise in overblown, juvenile comic-book mythology. But as that sort of thing goes, you could do worse: At least it's nowhere near as belligerently self-important as CONAN THE BARBARIAN. Righteous barbarian warrior Kull (Kevin Sorbo), who will take no woman against her will, ascends to the throne of Valusia and runs afoul of a gang of scheming noblemen, offended by Kull's attempts to free slaves, establish freedom of religion and other such borderline-Communist actions. Seduced and stripped of his crown by reincarnated witch Akivasha (Tia Carrera), who plans to restore hell to Earth, Kull must join forces with ostracized priest Ascalante (Litefoot) and soothsaying slave girl Zareta (Karina Lombard) to search for the fabled "breath of Valka," the only force that can destroy Akivasha. There seems to have been some disagreement about whether this was to be a swaggering sword-and-sorcery epic or a self-referential romp on the order of Sorbo's successful Hercules TV show. The occasional wisenheimer remarks -- "Now you tell me," quips the aggrieved Kull when Ascalante gets on his holy high-horse about slaughtering people -- stand out like the cynical afterthoughts they almost certainly were: Pulp writer Robert E. Howard, who created Kull (and Conan, by the way), was nothing if not serious about his sweaty fantasies. It's very hard indeed to imagine Harvey Fierstein having any place in them, though Fierstein's brief appearance as the backstabbing trader Juba is in fact one of the film's more genuinely entertaining interludes. Sorbo fills out a pair of leather pants nicely, and Carrera and Lombard look extremely fetching in their filmy veils. The frequent scenes of hand-to-hand combat, scored to conspicuously anachronistic thrash-metal, are surprisingly bloodless, presumably to ensure the film's PG-13 rating. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
