This slight film designed to cash in on the rap music trend hangs its many production numbers on the thinnest of plots. Blair Underwood (later of "LA Law") is a record producer trying to start up his own label, Krush Groove. To do so, he borrows from loan shark Richard E. Gant, whose goons lean on Underwood after he fails to pay back on time. After being subjected to some severe thrashing, Underwood gets the money together, pays off the loan, and make his company a success. So much for the story; the real point here is to showcase performances by the Fat Boys, Run DMC, Kurtis Blow, Sheila E. (who also plays Underwood's love interest), and future stars LL Cool J and Bobby Brown (then a member of New Edition). Not much acting is on display, the dialog is simplistic, the story is superficial, and the direction is faceless, but true fans won't care. Others have been warned. leave a comment
