An utterly tasteless comedy revolving around penis sheaths, distasteful fraud and shameless exploitation. Professor Krippendorf (Richard Dreyfuss) is on the brink of disaster: He's compelled to lecture about the lost tribe he's supposedly been studying with research funds he actually squandered on day-to-day living expenses. Since he hasn't actually done any research -- his late wife was the real academic brain of the pair -- he recklessly decides to concoct a fake tribe from New Guinea, using scraps of footage left over from the last research trip the family actually took. He then merrily embellishes, creating out of whole cloth the lore of the "Shelmikedmu," a name cobbled together from those of kids Shelly (Natasha Lyonne), Mickey (Gregory Smith) and Edmund (Carl Michael Lindner), all of whom do a great job hating their self-pitying pop. In a stroke of perfect casting, Jenna Elfman plays Veronica Micelli, a shameless self-promoter of a young prof who wants, for unfathomable reasons, to hitch her wagon to the sclerotic, hateful, has-been Krippendorf, on whom she once had a crush. Feminist anthropologist Ruth Allen (Lily Tomlin) and Veronica are the frequent targets of Krippendorf's unpleasant misogyny just because they're there. The wildly insensitive tone of the movie is probably due to a thoroughly botched adaptation from a book that was decidedly darker and featured incest and cannibalism (jettisoned), as well as the ritual circumcision director Todd Holland keeps and plays for laughs. This is egregious dreck of the lowest order: Avoid it at all costs and, for heaven's sake, keep it away from the kids. leave a comment --Sandra Contreras
