Krakatoa, East Of Java: Review

Despite all of the spectacular effects and technical expertise, this film was almost as much of a disaster as the actual disaster it depicted. Aimed at a youthful audience, it's a fairly simple-minded story about one of the most devastating natural events that ever took place. It's 1883 in Singapore. Schell's ship leaves for Krakatoa in search of a pearl-laden vessel that has sunk near the volcanic island. Using the GRAND HOTEL and SHIP OF FOOLS formula, the film presents a ship full of various types: Baker is the widow of the downed ship's captain, Keith is a diver, Brazzi and Mineo are balloonists, Leyton is a diving bell pilot with claustrophobia, Chan is the leader of a group of Japanese women capable of diving to great depths, and Cannon is one of a group of criminals on their way to be imprisoned. En route to Krakatoa, the ship encounters very rough weather. Soon enough, the convicts mutiny and take command of the vessel. Schell, captain of the ship, kills Cannon and sets the crooks to sea in life boats. Meanwhile, Krakatoa rumbles away. The Japanese women and Leyton recover the sunken ship's safe, but it's empty except for the captain's log. Schell's boat picks up the members of the island's Catholic mission, who are floating in the water; Baker's son is part of the fleeing group. Naturally, the boy has the pearls with him. Baker divides the booty as the island erupts and huge tidal waves begin. The passengers lash themselves to the ship and attempt to ride the volcano's fury as the picture ends. Shot on the island of Majorca, the film is visually stunning, but the acting is mostly wooden. Despite some good miniature work and strong special effects, which received an Oscar nomination, KRAKATOA sinks under the weight of a lackluster screenplay. leave a comment
