Arthur Kennedy, who played the brother of boxers in CHAMPION (1949) and CITY FOR CONQUEST (1941), throws the punches himself this time as Johnny Rocket, a promising young fighter who gives up the ring to please his new bride (Olympe Bradna). Unwilling to let the promise of a big payoff slip away, Trego (Anthony Quinn), Johnny's manager, sees to it that his fighter is unable to find any other work, and before long Johnny is winning fights again, falling for the charms of a socialite sportswriter (Virginia Field), and ruining his marriage. Trying to make a quick killing, Trego drugs Johnny before a big fight and bets against him. True to formula, Johnny loses both the fight and his fair-weather female admirer, but though things look bleak for him, he is both loved and redeemed by the finale. A strong script, consistent direction, realistic fight footage, and adequate performances combine to make this a very watchable boxing film. leave a comment
