Arthur Kennedy, who played the brother of boxers in CHAMPION (1949) and CITY FOR CONQUEST (1941), throws the punches himself this time as Johnny Rocket, a promising young fighter who gives up the ring to please his new bride (Olympe Bradna). Unwilling to let the promise of a big payoff slip away, Trego (Anthony Quinn), Johnny's manager, sees to it that his fighter is unable to find any other work, and before long Johnny is winning fights again, falling for the charms of a socialite sportswriter (Virginia Field), and ruining his marriage.
